Demolition Update

Demolition is coming along very nicely.  We are about 85% complete with the demolition with only the washrooms remaining.   The last few days have seen Joe, my contractor, working on the second floor demolition and bagging up 80 year old insulation for disposal.

Only one hiccup along the way so far.  While taking the second floor ceiling down and exposing the attic, it turns out one of the walls was load-bearing.  This was a problem initially as our original plan was to move that wall a few inches from it’s current location.  We had to hire a structural engineer who revised our drawings that were then re-submitted to the city for permits.  Ultimately, a reinforced beam will be required to carry the load of the roof down to the foundation but visually, the end result will look the same.

You can see from one of the photos, some new electrical wiring being roughed in.  Those will be for the future pot lights.  Wherever possible at the moment, our electrician has started to rough-in in an effort to be timely and efficient.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the progress.  No major, unforeseen problems so far.
